Flash on Camera
lesson by Zen Buckaroo

The simplest and least expensive method of solving lighting problems is to put an electronic flash on your camera. This can be used as either a 'main' lighting source or as a 'flash fill'.

Several of the fetish type magazines like 'Leg Show' or Leg Action' use photo sets that are done with a certain 'amateur' look.  They look like they were shot by some reader of an amateur model. Although a large flash with a battery pack will give you the light you need with few problems, you can get by with smaller units if you are careful.  Your biggest problem with smaller units will be that of under exposure. If you don't have a flash meter to check each shot you will need to do tests of different distances that you think you might use.  Do these with the film you plan to use and do not trust the guide that is on the flash.  In some cases you will need to 'bracket' your shots. It means wasting film, but at least you can be sure of not losing an expensive shooting (paying model, film processing, and extras)

Once you get your exposure figured out it becomes pretty simple to just point and shoot.  In the case of flash fill it can be a bit more complicated.  You will be mixing the light of your flash with the ambient light. You will need to do other tests to fine tune the ratio so that you don't either 'over fill' or 'under fill'. You will see examples of this on the photo example page.  Keep in mind that these lessons are not to teach you the basic techniques of photography.  You should have done that elsewhere.  It is our job to try to teach you how to use your abilities (at no matter what level) to shoot girls that you will hopefully sell. I will try to teach you some useful techniques as we go forward, but you will need to learn photography from the photography books.

Because there is little to learn of a strictly technical nature, most of this lesson will be by examples.  Study the photos and the notes that accompany them and you will pick up the techniques that you need to sell your sets.

Keep in mind that if you cannot afford one of quantum battery packs with a pro type flash, you will need to carefully monitor your exposures.  Otherwise you may want to do an extra 'bracket' of each shot.

a digital camera will give you more latitude
and much cheaper to practice with

Shot for Oriental Dolls

Flash on camera indoors without window or some other light is usually too harsh for 'pretty girl' type shootings.  It is quite sufficient if you are doing a photo story  which is what this was shot for.  It was a piece I did on the wild girls of Bangkok.  3000 words and a dozen photos.  I got $400 and had lots of fun with the girls.  Usually you can 'hire' them for 'modeling' which can continue until the next morning. I think I just broke even on my expenses but it was lots of fun!!! For more photos on the 'models the models I have shot over the years go to http://pinup4u.com/

Shot for LEG SHOW magazine.

Some magazines love these 'caught in action' type shots. The low angle that you can get by shooting on stairs accent the legs for the 'leg magazines'.  Often there is little light in these stair wells and flash on camera is the only way to get the shot.  It also gives the shot a sleazier type feel that many viewers find erotic.  The girls and the scenes become more 'real' which is a turn on for many guys.
